Founded in 2014 by Occupational Therapist Nicola Stirton who recognised the need for a special needs school after working with many children students with behavioural problems, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities, Bloom Special Needs Centre and School is a creative sanctuary where every child is cherished for who they are.
From an initial avert in The North Coast Courier where Nicole expressed her wish to ascertain the need for such a school, it took about 18 months, working in association with a group of parents, to formalise the implementation, direction, and vision for the Bloom Special Needs School. When the school first opened its doors it was situated in Lower Ballito, but with no outdoor space its future growth was restricted. After a year the school relocated to Eden Village where it operated and grew for 8 years. Incredibly in April 2023. the school moved to its own premises, Bloom Village just off the R 102 bordering Umhlali Preparatory School.
Encompassing 38 passionate staff that provide a blend of speech therapist, occupational therapist and dedicated teaching skills Bloom has modelled a customised syllabus tailored to meet each child’s individual needs. They also use an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each child so they can release each learner’s true potential. Today Bloom has 45 children in several Autism Specific Classes, two Mixed Disability Classes and a Mainstream learner pre-school.
Offering a haven of love and support to children with diverse needs and abilities, Bloom Village is far more than just an educational institution; it’s a creative sanctuary where every child is cherished for who they are.
Bloom Village is an NPO and relies on fundraising to cover monthly running costs, since much of the time they are running in the red. It is through the support of the local community throughout the year at various fund-raising events and activities that Bloom can exist. Together with local businessmen and companies, Local Real Estate is proud to be associated with these events which brings people together who share a common goal whereby Bloom Village can focus on the future and ensure every student receives the support they need.
