Ballito Pro Powers Local Economy and Tourism Growth

Making waves and history at this year’s Ballito Pro—part of the World Surf League’s prestigious Challenger Series—Luke Thompson surged to victory, becoming the first South African to win the event since 2017, and the first South African since 2021 to make the finals.

The 2025 edition of The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill marked its 56th year, taking place from 22 June to 6 July along the KwaDukuza coastline at Willard Beach. As the world's longest-running professional surfing contest, The Ballito Pro has evolved into a major lifestyle event— hosting one of South Africa’s largest beach music events. It features top-tier entertainment, including performances from the country’s leading bands over three nights. Additionally, The Ballito Pro also includes extreme sports displays (this year showcasing Red Bull Enduro athlete Brian Capper, one of the continent’s most versatile riders), offers beach recreational activities for all ages, and enables local retailers and the local community to gain exposure and attract new customers.

According to Collette Bundy, Festival Organiser for The Ballito Pro, the 2025 event drew over 180,000 visitors—firmly cementing its status as one of the region’s most impactful tourism drivers. Beyond the significant influx of visitors, The Ballito Pro delivers tangible economic benefits to the North Coast, stimulating local businesses through increased demand for accommodation, dining, retail, and entertainment. It also supports short-term employment and vendor opportunities. With new elements added each year to elevate the experience, and a strong focus on ocean conservation through its environmental campaign, the event continues to boost Ballito’s profile as a premier destination—encouraging repeat tourism and long-term investment in the region.

Driven by vision, dedication, and a commitment to being more than just a surf event, The Ballito Pro continues to lead the wave—championing excellence, community spirit, sustainability, music, and an enduring celebration of surf culture.
